Liz Thompson - Mackeral Beach
Exhibition: 19 March to 19 April, 2003
Liz Thompson's photographs lovingly portray the place she lives in, and the people who share it with her. Mackeral Beach is a small community an hour from Sydney and accessible only by water. There are no cars and no shops - only a ferry which drops off milk and papers. About a hundred people live there permanently, commuting to work and school. This body of work celebrates the richness and diversity of her community, whether it's the Mackeral Cricket Test, washing the community fire engine, moments of crisis for which the resident nurse is always on call, or the quiet moments leaning on gate posts chatting with neighbours. There is a spirit and sharing depicted that seems to give life greater substance.
