Ruth Maddison - Now a river went out of Eden
Exhibition: 19 March to 19 April, 2003
When she moved to Eden on the South Coast of NSW a few years ago, Ruth Maddison was able to view the community with the clear eyes of an outsider. What struck her was the determination of young people to remain in Eden despite the few opportunities or facilities for them. Economically depressed, it has traditionally depended on the fishing and timber industries for survival. She set about photographing the young people of the area and in so doing articulated what it is to belong to a place, and discovered for herself, a way of becoming part of her community.
