Carolyn Dew
Exhibition: 20 November to 23 December, 2002
In Beautiful Fakes, Carolyn Dew explores the emotional and behavioral boundaries that exist between public and private space using exquisite miniature photomontages. The architectural form of the window, its pictorial equivalent the picture frame and the decorative trim of the home are recurring motifs in her work. Her images of picturesque landscapes within a decorative trim place the viewer at the threshold of the decorated interior of the home and the surrounding landscape. In so doing, they seem both comforting and claustrophobic, suggesting a quiet tension between the physical and psychological spaces we inhabit.
